(x+y)(x-y) = y(x-y)
x+y = y
1+1 = 1
1 = 0

multiply both sides by 3
1 = 0.999...

10x = 9.999...
10x - x = 9.999... - .999...
9x = 9
x = 1

since there is no number between 9.999... and 10, we can therefore imply they are the same number
