At what point...

...does asking for donations become blackmail for slander?
I was asked to give donations for a cause. While I am not opposed to it, I didn't have any money on me (honestly!). The person suggested I pledge the money and turn it in. Something about that suggestion made me uncomfortable; I didn't want to "owe" money to a charity. Again, I am not against the cause, and I honestly would have given that dollar had I had the dollar on me at the time. But something about the way it was asked of me made me feel like I would be "punished" if I didn't pledge the money.
I mentioned this situation to Kate, and she related to Friends, where Ross didn't want to donate money for the handyman's going-away party. The situation is different, but he chose not to pay, and he was slandered mercilessly. It's quite unfair really. They chipped in $100 apiece in that situation. Man 100 bucks times the number of tenants in a multi-floor apartment? That's a lot of money.
I remember in 5th grade, I suggested that instead of me and my friends each giving small presents to our friend for his bday, we should give him $5 bucks to go towards Mortal Kombat. No one supported my idea, saying that it would be lame to only give him 5 bucks, especially when his parents probably wouldn't let him use that money for that GORY game.
I bet the people who hated on Mortal Kombat had serious issues when GTA3 came out.
